A high-alert security operation was carried out on Friday at Udyog Bhawan, one of Central Delhi’s prominent government buildings, after a hoax threat about a bomb was received, said police. The threat, received via email early in the morning, prompted an extensive bomb check, ultimately resulting in the building being declared safe.
The threat email, reportedly sent at 6:49 am to top officials of ministries housed in the buildings, claimed that IEDs had been planted within the building complex. The message ended with a warning to evacuate the building by 3:15 pm.
Officials from the office of the Secretary of Heavy Industries flagged the emails to multiple security agencies, including the Delhi Police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and Delhi Fire Services (DFS). DFS reported receiving the first call at 1:01 PM.
Security personnel then conducted a bomb sweep of the buildings using around a dozen sniffer dogs and four bomb detection and disposal squads from CISF and Delhi Police. The operation spanned several hours and concluded by 5:10 pm. No suspicious items were found during the checks, said police officials.
Officials have confirmed that cyber protection teams are actively investigating the digital trail of the threatening email, and efforts are ongoing to identify the sender. “We are investigating the origins of the email from which the threat came. We will also analyse the other hoax mails that came in recent months and look if there are any common links,” a police officer said.
