To manage localised air pollution in Delhi and to eliminate dust pollution at source, the Environment Department on Thursday issued directions on the mandatory installation of anti-smog guns in high-rise buildings.

The department also stipulated the criteria for high-rise buildings that needed to install the anti-smog guns, barring the monsoon season. They include all commercial complexes, malls and hotels with a built-up area of more than 3,000 sqm. Office buildings and residential societies, and complexes have been exempted.

The directive also said that during winters in 2023, 98 anti-smog guns were deployed in high-rise buildings, including that of government and private owners. Similarly, last year 156 anti-smog guns were deployed. “But it is seen that there is a need to bring all the buildings in Delhi which hold potential towards deployment of anti-smog gun on the top and thus play a large feasible role in managing localised air pollution, particularly in reducing particulate matter,” it said.

As early as in 2022, the nature of such buildings were identified by the Delhi L-G’s office, it said.

The directive also mentions the guidelines issued in 2022. According to the guidelines, water consumption should not exceed 1000-1200 litres per hour and 10,000 litres a day with 8 hours of running; sound decibels need to be minimum, need for a suitable air quality monitoring equipment integrated to the overall system. There are also specific guidelines to fit the equipment on a wheeled trailer with the size of the nozzle’s aperture and the throw distance preferred at 75 to 100 metres.

Festive offer

Besides, the department laid down the recommendations on the size of water droplets to be reduced to have a mist effect, and placed between 7 and not higher than a 10-storeyed building. An intermittent running is recommended rather than running round-the-clock.

Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on Friday, “For the first time, Delhi has acted with to curb a long-ignored pollution source. This is accountability in action.”

The implementation is to be enforced by agencies including Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Central Public Works Department (CPWD), National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), and Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), with quarterly compliance reporting to the Environment Department.
